The technology is on-board (not track-side), ensuring a better quality of data, reliability, and the ability to monitor track condition. Our system can act as a decision support tool for “Rough Ride” calls, reducing impact on passengers.

Continuous asset monitoring provides the operator with valuable information on the quality of assets, whether new or recently refurbished. For example, the tool can demonstrate which overhauled gearboxes are sub-normal before they fail in service. This information enables the proactive engagement with the entire supply chain.

 

FREIGHT

Most freight cars have no power, so the use of our vibration energy harvester allows monitoring functions to be deployed without worrying about the problems associated with batteries.

Perpetuum supplies Vibration Energy Harvesters with high levels of power suitable not only for monitoring the wagon, but also its cargo for temperature, pressure, leakage and security.

The data can be communicated over a long range through GPRS transmissions. Alternatively, the power can be used to drive wireless networks that communicate all the data, including wheel and brake data, to the locomotive cab. GPS tracking with regular updates transmitted by GPRS is also a practical solution for tracking the progress of wagons.

 

INFRASTRUCTURE MONITORING

As well as providing information and data on the vehicle’s assets (axle bearings, wheels, gearboxes, motors), the Remote Condition Monitoring tool also enables operators and infrastructure managers to collaborate effectively and manage the wheel rail interface in real time, taking decisions that will reduce timetable disruptions and poor ride quality for passengers.

The tool provides the user with alerts based on rate of change and levels of track health presenting information for each rail against time, distance and severity. The algorithms can differentiate between impacts and gradual degradation, so can summarise whether the impacts are predominantly vertical or lateral, meaning the track teams can better prepare for a site visit.
